Two inmates at the county lockup in Macon have tested positive for COVID-19, according to a report by NBC affiliate WMGT 41.

The inmates are jailed at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center.

Both reportedly experienced “possible flu-like symptoms approximately one week ago” and were moved to the jail’s infirmary area.

Officials said their symptoms were mild, and that the jail was continuing to monitor the pair and others in nearby cells, as well as guards who worked the area.

Jail officials were not certain about of the origins of the infections, and were investigating.

The two arrived at the jail several months before they became ill, WMGT reports. Staff immediately sanitized the areas where the inmates were housed.

Jail officials have also updated some of the facility’s procedures in response.

“Everyone who enters the jail facility will have their temperature taken before being allowed to make entry,” the jail said in a news release, according to WMGT. “Inmates entering the jail are medically screened and must answer a COVID-19 questionnaire before being processed.”
