A man was injured Monday night in an exchange of gunfire with police who were responding to a domestic call in DeKalb County, officials said.
Terace Williams, 21, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he remains in critical condition Tuesday.
Williams was standing outside a home on Beech Drive in the Belvedere Park neighborhood when DeKalb police arrived about 5:35 p.m. Monday, according to GBI spokeswoman Natalie Ammons. Officers were called to the area about a domestic dispute.
In social media posts, DeKalb police said the man was holding a gun when officers responded. He raised his gun and fired at the responding officers “after a brief dialogue,” police said.
Ammons said officers gave commands for Williams to show his hands, but he allegedly did not comply.
“During the incident, Williams fired on the officers,” she said in a news release. “Four DKPD officers returned fire, striking Williams. A handgun was recovered at the scene.”
No officers were reported injured.
It is the eighth officer-involved shooting the GBI has been asked to investigate this year, none of which were fatal.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don’t involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI’s tally.
