A woman who was detained Friday night following a shooting that left one man dead at an apartment complex near downtown Atlanta has been released.
Officers responded to the Point at Westside Apartments on Northside Drive for a person shot call, Atlanta police said in a news release. At the scene, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Grady paramedics who arrived after police pronounced the man dead at the scene.
He was identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office as Reginald Simon, 24, of Atlanta.
A woman was detained at the apartment and later released after questioning, Atlanta police spokesman Sgt. Jarius Daugherty told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Homicide investigators responded and are continuing to work to determine the circumstances around the shooting, but police have not said how the woman was involved.
The apartment complex where the shooting took place is just across the railroad tracks from downtown Atlanta’s Centennial Park District, which is swarmed with crowds for multiple Labor Day weekend events. It is directly across the street from the Yellow Lot, a large parking lot that serves Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
A public viewing for Simon will be held Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. at Cook Brothers Funeral Directors in Fairburn. A funeral service is set for the following day at 1 p.m. at Saint Smyrna Baptist Church in Newnan.
“He was the most sweetest person with a smile that would light up a room. You will be missed, my baby,” a friend wrote in Simon’s obituary.
