Temperatures in metro Atlanta will be at or near freezing overnight Saturday, and that will be the trend for the next several days. So make sure your home and loved ones are prepared.

The frigid weather, which began Friday evening, has prompted the opening of several warming centers across the metro area. The city of Atlanta, DeKalb County and Gwinnett County, as well as MUST Ministries in Cobb County, have designated spaces where those in need can get through the bitter cold.

Temps across the area will be five to 10 degrees below normal for this time of year, according to the National Weather Service. And below average temperatures are anticipated through the second week of December in Georgia and the Eastern U.S., the agency said.

On Friday, a sunny afternoon helped highs reach the upper 40s. On Saturday, Atlanta will reach a high of 52 degrees, but other parts of North Georgia may only reach the upper 40s.

Overnight lows in the metro will be right at freezing and other parts of North Georgia will be in the mid to high 20s, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said. Overnight on Sunday will be even colder, with lows in the city reaching 29 degrees.

Even worse, Monday and Tuesday could potentially see lows dip to 26 and 28 degrees, Deon said. Highs will stay in the low 50s and upper to mid-40s at least through Wednesday, according to the forecast.

In Atlanta, two warming centers will be open Friday through Sunday nights starting at 8 p.m. They include:

» Central Park Recreation Center at 400 Merritts Avenue

» Old Adamsville Recreation Center at 3404 Delmar Lane

In DeKalb, four centers will open at the same time, 8 p.m. each day through Sunday. They include:

» Frontline Response International at 2585 Gresham Road

» North DeKalb Senior/Community Center at 3393 Malone Drive

» Mason Mill Recreation Center at 1340 McConnell Drive

» Exchange Recreation Center at 2771 Columbia Drive

Gwinnett’s warming stations will open Friday and Saturday evenings starting at 6 p.m. They include:

» Buford Senior Center at 2755 Sawnee Avenue

» Shorty Howell Park Activity Building at 2750 Pleasant Hill Road

» Best Friend Park Gym at 6224 Jimmy Carter Boulevard

» Centerville Senior Center at 3025 Bethany Church Road

» Lawrenceville Senior Center at 225 Benson Street

MUST Ministries will open its winter weather shelter each night from Friday through Monday. Those looking to spend the night should check in by 8 p.m., the organization said. Dinner and a hot breakfast will be served. The shelter is located at 1297 Bells Ferry Road in Marietta.
