The Fulton County Board of Education on Thursday gave preliminary approval to a $1.6 billion budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

The board is scheduled to give final approval at its June 8 meeting.

The largest chunk of the budget is the $1.096 billion for the general fund.

Included in the general fund is a roughly $30 million compensation package with a 2% raise for employees. Eligible workers also would receive a step increase based on years of experience.
