Caitlyn Frisina, the Florida teenager who went missing with her former soccer coach, was afraid to leave the country with him, new court records show.
The 17-year-old was located safe Friday in central New York. Her former soccer coach Rian Rodriguez, 27, is currently in jail on a charge of interference with a child's custody.
According to Rodriguez's arrest warrant affidavit, a friend of Frisina told her parents the teenager said Rodriguez wanted her to leave the country with him.
The affidavit also noted that the high school senior at Fort White High School said “she didn’t know how to get out (of) it and if she did he would mess up her life.”
Frisina’s parents discovered sexual messages on Snapchat between her and Rodriguez after her disappearance.
Rodriguez’s arrest warrant affidavit said a friend of Caitlyn’s told her parents after her disappearance that the teen had “hooked up” with Rodriguez.
The affidavit also reveals that a school resource officer investigated a rumor in August that Frisina and Rodriguez were in a relationship, but concluded it was false.
Frisina was found in North Syracuse, more than 1,000 miles from Lake City. The 2001 red Mercury Sable in which she was riding was spotted by a New York State Police officer who initiated a traffic stop.
New York State Police said the Sable then pulled into a parking lot in front of a Subway where Rodriguez and Frisina were taken into custody without incident.
Frisina was reunited with her family Saturday. A Frisina family member posted photos of the reunion.
The teen had tears in her eyes and clung to her father as her parents spoke about their reunion.
“We’re looking forward to a lot more time together,” said her mother, Scarlet Frisina. “We had a very beautiful, wonderful, very emotional reunion with her a little while ago and we are so thankful to have her back.”
“It’s been difficult. I’m glad to have my daughter back where I know I can protect her and keep her safe, as a father always wants to do,” said Caitlyn’s father, Ward Frisina.
Jail records show Rodriguez is due in Onondaga court Monday.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said additional charges are possible and they will hold a press conference Monday to update the case.
