A former sergeant for the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office died after being treated for the coronavirus, just a month after his retirement, the agency announced Tuesday.

Sgt. Stanley Wilson, 70, died Monday after being hospitalized with COVID-19, according to his former coworker and personal friend, Shannon Volkadov. In a Facebook post, the sheriff’s office described Wilson as “a phenomenal deputy, friend, leader and father.”

He was a 25-year veteran of the agency who retired in January, according to a news release.

“He was a true gentleman and a great cop who is loved and respected by many people,” Volkadov told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Wilson was a talented musician who often volunteered to play at sheriff’s office events, Volkadov said.

“There are many heavy hearts today,” Volkadov said. “As hard as it is to say goodbye, I’m so thankful I was blessed to know him. The music in heaven surely got louder as one of the greatest walked through the pearly gates onto the streets of gold.”

Wilson is survived by three daughters: Teresa, Stephanie and Amanda, according to the agency.
