A man suspected in an October 2020 homicide near Austell was arrested this week, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Varnell Davontez Sanders was arrested Monday and later booked into the Cobb County jail, where he was being held without bond late Wednesday. Sanders is the second suspect charged with murder in the death of 44-year-old Harold Roberson, according to police.

Investigators believe Roberson was killed during an armed robbery. Shortly before 7 p.m. on Oct. 20, 2020, Sanders and Joshua Elisha Sams allegedly took “large amounts of marijuana and cash” from Roberson on Concepts 21 Circle, arrest warrants state. During the robbery, Roberson was shot and died from his injuries, according to police.

Sams, then 22, was arrested in April and booked into the Cobb jail. Sams, who lives in Villa Rica, is free on $137,700 bond, according to court records. On Jan. 8, an arrest warrant was issued for Sanders.

On Monday, the Cobb County Sheriff’s Fugitive Unit and the U.S. Marshals Service requested help from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Fugitive Unit to find Sanders, who was arrested without incident.

In addition to murder, both Sanders and Sams have been charged with aggravated assault, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to police.
