Wind advisory in effect for metro Atlanta on frigid Sunday

Metro Atlantans should bundle up before venturing outside Sunday as frigid temperatures and wind gusts of up to 40 mph are expected across much of the state.

Just two days after the city neared 80 degrees, a cold front has led temperatures to plummet.

Forecasters are projecting those temperatures will stay below 50 degrees Sunday.

In addition, a wind advisory was in effect for most of Georgia until 7 p.m.

“We are drying out, but it is going to be a blustery day all across North Georgia,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said. “It’s still going to be gusty as we head into the evening.”

Those heavy winds gusts of 30 to 40 mph are likely to cause tree limbs to fall and could lead to power outages, forecasters warned. Loose objects around your homes should be secured, and drivers are advised to take caution while navigating the roadways, the National Weather Service said.

Deon said heavier winds are expected in the afternoon when temperatures will be in the upper 40s. Those gusts will ease slightly into the evening but will still be noticeable as it gets colder. There will be even higher gusts in the North Georgia mountains.

The good news is that, unlike Saturday, there will be plenty of sunshine, Deon said.

By Monday morning, temperatures will continue to drop into the 20s, with the wind chill making it feel even colder. Forecasters project wind gusts Monday to near 25 mph.

“The cold will increase the risk for cold-related illnesses,” the NWS said. “Make sure the kids are bundled up for the bus stop.”

Temperatures will start to rise again after Monday. Highs are expected to be at least 60 degrees from Wednesday to Sunday, forecasters said.
