Two teenagers have been arrested in Troup County on charges related to the shooting death of a 22-year-old LaGrange woman.

Cameryn Phillips, 17, of Franklin, was arrested Thursday by sheriff’s deputies and charged with several felonies, including involuntary manslaughter, four counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

The arrest comes after the shooting death of Hayley Newsom on Sunday, according to Sgt. Stewart Smith of the Troup County Sheriff’s Office. In their initial investigation, deputies reported that Phillips was waving a handgun inside a home on Meadowbrook Trail when he accidentally fired a shot that struck Newsom in the head. Newsom was taken to a local hospital and then flown to Atlanta, where she later died.

The investigation led deputies to arrest another man for selling the handgun to Phillips, who is a minor. Joshua K. Baker, 18, of Newnan, was also arrested Thursday and charged with furnishing a pistol to a person under the age of 18, a felony. Baker has not been booked into jail.

“From the time this tragic incident occurred, my team of investigators has been working around the clock to bring a resolution to this case and hopefully to the family of Haley,” Troup Sheriff James Woodruff said. “I greatly appreciate the job they do. Unfortunately, this case is a sad reminder of the importance of gun safety and how if handled improperly can result in tragedy.”

Phillips is being held at the Troup County Jail without bond.
