As part of the I-285 Westbound Auxiliary Lane Extension, the Georgia Department of Transportation plans to replace the bridge over I-285 at Mount Vernon Highway from Roswell Road to Riverside Sandy Springs. GDOT’s plan will only provide a six-foot sidewalk for pedestrians. But Sandy Springs would like to include bicycle accommodations and additional pedestrian accommodations in addition to the proposed six-foot sidewalk.
In a recently approved agreement, Sandy Springs will partner with GDOT on enhancements to add bike lanes, pedestrian lighting and decorative elements to provide the city-desired aesthetic elements established in previous bridge enhancement agreements with GDOT.
“We are excited to continue this ongoing effort as part of our partnership with the Georgia Department of Transportation,” said Mayor Rusty Paul. “It’s important to the citizens of Sandy Springs that our city be a walkable one. When structures like bridges are replaced, we want to make them pedestrian friendly.”
The city will be responsible for the additional $3,203,000 price tag for the enhancements. The city is counting on voters approval of the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax 2021 Nov. 2 to pay for the project.
