The Marietta Museum of History has established its Cobb County Latinx Research Archives, with the help of two Kennesaw State University classes.

“Latinx” is a gender-neutral alternative to Latino (boy) or Latina (girl), “of, relating to or marked by Latin American heritage,” according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

This project is an ongoing process and a culmination of the work completed by two English 1102: Honors Composition II classes in 2020 and 2021, with students in the Honors Journey College at KSU.

Students in Dr. Rochelle Harris Cox’s classes helped to establish the first set of research at the museum focused primarily on Latin American history and the establishment of Latin Americans in the Cobb community.

The students have contributed more than 200 files of new information to the research archives since this collaboration began in 2018.

Earlier classes focused on adding to the existing Cobb County African American Research Archives at the museum.

In 2019, a reception was hosted by KSU’s Center for African and African Diaspora Studies to thank these students for their work in continuing the museum’s efforts to preserve all history.

The museum covers topics such as military history, home life throughout the centuries, technology, and Cobb and Marietta businesses from the past.

This museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays, but check the website for holiday and COVID-19 closings at MariettaHistory.org.

Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and students and free for children 5 and under.
