Today’s mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, which left at least 18 children dead, has shifted the tenor at many election parties in Georgia.

Several candidates, including Gov. Brian Kemp and Republican U.S. Senate nominee Herschel Walker, waited until after President Joe Biden finished his televised response before launching into their victory speeches.

At Walker’s watch party, the crowd grew hushed as Biden began to speak. But they booed when he mentioned the need for gun control. And when Tucker Carlson came back on Fox News and called Biden “frail” they laughed.

Meanwhile, Democratic Congresswoman Lucy McBath, who lost her son to gun violence and has made gun control her central focus on Capitol Hill, has revamped her speech for tonight to discuss what happened in Texas, the AJC’s Tia Mitchell reported.

Earlier in the evening, many candidates issued statements expressing their sadness and disbelief about the situation.

While most Republicans stuck to offering their prayers, many Democrats also stressed the need for new gun control laws.
