Captain Herb Emory left us far too soon earlier this year when he died of a heart attack at 61, but his giving spirit lives on.
The iconic WSB radio traffic reporter's colleagues are carrying on his annual Toys for Tots drive this year in his memory. WSB Traffic Team members Doug Turnbull, Mark McKay, Mark Arum and Jason Durden are hosting this year's drive starting at 11 a.m. Dec. 13 at Fred's Bar-B-Q House, 541 Thornton Road in Lithia Springs (770-941-1155, fredsbbqhouse.net).
“As stellar as Captain Herb was as a traffic reporter on WSB, he was even more of a rock star in the community,” Turnbull said. “Captain Herb was the face of and the driving force behind this Toys for Tots event for many years and found a way to incorporate so many people.”
WSB will broadcast live from 1 to 4 p.m. during the drive, and volunteers will accept toys on behalf of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, which provides holiday cheer to children who might otherwise go without. Other festivities will include live music and appearances by WSB personalities.
“He meant so much to Atlanta commuters, but even more to his local community in Douglas County,” Turnbull said. “He was a top-notch Atlanta radio personality who never acted like anything more than a regular guy and was Christ-like in how he made an effort to reach out to the smallest people and make them feel huge. We feel a special charge to try and carry that torch.”
‘Nice guy’ Ryan Gosling spotted in Buckhead
Ryan Gosling is in Atlanta filming "The Nice Guys" with Russell Crowe. Nice guy that he is, Gosling poses for pictures when he dines out and people recognize him behind the groovy mustache he is sporting in keeping with the film's 1970s time period. He recently dined at Chops and took photos with some of the restaurant's employees.
The movie is set in late 1970s Los Angeles and concerns a detective who stumbles onto a dark conspiracy while investigating a mysterious death. It has filmed in a number of metro Atlanta locations including downtown, the retro-fabulous Sandy Springs home of producer Dallas Austin, and Stone Mountain.
