Whether it's the summer heat, or your waistline or alcohol tolerance, sometimes you need a lighter, healthier cocktail. Many metro Atlanta bars are happy to oblige. Here are five local cocktails with health benefits.

Ration + Dram

130 Arizona Ave. NE, Atlanta. 678-974-8380. rationanddram.com

The Ring Around the Rose is a light and slightly sweet cooler that includes Cocchi Rosa, an Italian aperitif, rose water and sparkling rosé. The restaurant's ingredients make it lower in alcohol than most. Plus, it has a lot of the same benefits of drinking red wine.

Seed Kitchen & Bar

1311 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 504, Marietta. 678-214-6888. eatatseed.com

The pomegranate grenadine used in the Seed 75 not only packs a flavor punch, it's also dye- and high-fructose-free. The cocktail contains other healthful bonuses, too. The bar uses Hayman's Old Tom Gin, which has a legacy that reaches back 150 years because it relies on a blend of 10 trusted botanicals. Not to mention that the pomegranate has proven antioxidant and the lemon juice has a bit of vitamin C.

Empire State South

999 Peachtree St. NE, No. 140, Atlanta. 404-541-1105. empirestatesouth.com

Like many of Empire State's concoctions, the Apio Con Chile includes liqueurs made from real fruit, juice with very little added sugar and nutritious ingredients like celery syrup made from Woodland Gardens.  It also includes GMO-free green chile vodka from San Francisco,-lime, sparkling wine and housemade Tajin spice. Hot!

Bliss Bar and Lounge

10305 Medlock Bridge Road, Johns Creek. 770-696-4250. blissjohnscreek.com
This summer the bar will feature lots of blended rum concoctions, some of them quite heady, but it will also provide simple cocktails with a real-fruit kick. A favorite among the low-alcohol, not-too-sweet versions is the Twisted Cognac. It's made with cognac and muddled fresh pineapple and strawberry.

Serpas True Food

659 Auburn Ave. NE, Suite 501, Atlanta. 404-688-0040. serpasrestaurant.com

This is a lighter option for people who aren't used to brown liquors or don't want the high calories or alcohol content from drinking them straight. The St. Vivienne combines Forty Creek Canadian whiskey with a bit of mutrition and citrusy flavor  from grapefruit and lemon juice. Then, bartenders here add a bit of herbaceous goodness from all-natural St. Germain elderflower liqueur. And instead of high fructose mixers, they incorportate the sweet touch that comes from wholesome maple syrup.
