Korto Momolu is the latest “Project Runway” alum to turn her 15 minutes of fame into a major retail partnership. The TV show’s season five first runner-up and fan favorite recently launched a signature accessories collection at Dillard’s. Liberia-born Momolu, who resides in Little Rock, is in Atlanta today to greet fans and show off her handbags and jewelry.

The collection, priced from $12 for a pair of earrings to $159 for a horn-handled hobo bag, features bold necklaces, earrings and handbags similar in style to her higher-end designs without the high-end price.

It makes sense that Dillard’s, also based in Little Rock, would partner with a local designer who was honored by the city with her own day of recognition, even though Momolu hasn’t been home much lately.

Early this month she held her first independent show at New York Fashion Week and now she’s off to do a round of coast-to-coast public appearances to promote her accessories collection. The busy designer took a few minutes to chat with us about her post “Project Runway” life.

Q: How did “Project Runway” help or hurt you as a designer?

A: It opens up a lot of doors. My thing was getting to the end. I wanted to get to Bryant Park. Now when I call, I can just say “Korto.” There aren’t many Kortos running around. It’s been an amazing ride.

Q: What was the inspiration for your accessories collection with Dillard’s?

A: I was inspired by my original jewelry pieces — statement necklaces with a flair. I just kind of do what I feel in my heart.

Q: What are your must-have fashion items for spring?

A: I’ve always had a great bag. Every season I get a bag and a great pair of shoes. I like booties now —  always think, what can I pack to take from state to state?

Q: What was it like showing your fall collection during New York Fashion Week?

A: It was amazing. It was the first time I got to show in New York on my own. I got to represent who I am as a designer. I felt like I had a lot to prove to all the critics.
