The film industry is having a love affair with Atlanta.

In the new romantic comedy “Life As We Know It,” which ranked second during opening weekend earlier this month (it now ranks fifth according to boxofficemojo.com), the city played a starring role.

Alongside actors Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel – the Hawks, Piedmont Park, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and other local landmarks make an appearance. And unlike other recent blockbusters shot around town, Atlanta really is Atlanta.

This is made clear in the movie's opening scene when Heigl's Holly Berenson, an up-and-coming caterer, says to Duhamel's Eric Messer, a technical director, "I hear you just moved to Atlanta."

While Atlanta has become a hot spot for movie locations, it often serves as a stand-in for some other city. In the "Blind Side" starring Sandra Bullock, Atlanta starred as Memphis, Tenn. In "Keeping up with the Joneses," featuring Demi Moore and David Duchovny, Atlanta played the role of any suburban town in middle America.

The 330 productions shot in Atlanta this year had a combined budget of $744.3 million and an economic impact of $1.33 billion, according to data from the Georgia Department of Economic Development. And the city and surrounding areas seem to be attracting more and more high profile flicks.

“Fast and the Furious 5,” and the highly anticipated remake of “Footloose” and "Wanderlust" are among the films and TV shows shooting in metro Atlanta bringing actors such as Jennifer Aniston and Ryan Reynolds to town.

So while you’re watching the wildly improbably story of Heigl and Duhamel growing from sworn enemies to comely couple after their deceased friends designate them as caregivers to a 1 year old, take note of the following Atlanta highlights:

Belly General Store -- This Virginia Highland staple is converted to Fraiche, Holly Berenson's gourmet food store/ catering company. Low-brow Eric Messer invests in the shop to help Berenson expand even though he can't pronounce the name.

Piedmont Park - Messer takes early morning jogs through the city's well-known park before heading home to whatever female happens to be lounging in his bed.

The Atlanta Hawks -- Messer, depicted as a semi-slacker, is a technical director for a company which broadcasts the Hawks games. He manages to screw up his big break, but it is unclear if the mishap ruined his dream of taking the director's job.

City of Atlanta Police Department -- Berenson and Messer meet up at the police station after getting the bad news about their friends.

Whole Foods -- Okay, it's not an Atlanta landmark, but Berenson and Messer shop at Whole Foods (the logo is blurred on camera) where Messer has been using the baby to pick up ladies.
