Shuler Awards honor high school theater

Talk about a hot ticket! Tuesday night, Cobb Energy Centre hosted the Shuler Hensley Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theatre, establishing the Atlanta area's first musical-theater competition for high schools. The show opened with the the song "Oklahoma!" featuring young performers from 15 schools.

Shuler Hensley's opening performance of "Oklahoma!" was a nod to his portrayal of Jud Fry in that musical, which resulted in his winning the Tony Award for Best Actor in 2002. The new awards are named in Hensley's honor.

WSB news anchor Jovita Moore and Hensley served as Mistress and Masters of Ceremony for the Awards Show.

The Feature Performer award was received by A.J. Klopack of Pebblebrook High School for his portrayal of Willard Hewitt in the musical "Footloose."

The Supporting Actor award, presented by Jovita Moore, went to Arsalan Akhavan of Atlanta International School for his role as Cinderella's Prince in the Overall Production winner "Into The Woods."

Holy Innocent's Episcopal School was nominated for Overall Production with "Anything Goes." They performed "Heaven's Hop" from the popular musical.

Halina Wiktor from Paideia won the award for Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Evillene in "The Wiz."

Pebblebrook High School gave the crowd a high energy performance of "Let's Hear It For The Boy" from "Footloose," which was nominated for Overall Production.

Chris Manos, producer of Theater of the Stars, presented the Leading Actor award to Jake Moskowitz of Chattahoochee High School for his role as Emile de Becque in "South Pacific."

The cast of Atlanta International School's "Into The Woods," was the winner of the Shuler Hensley Award for Overall Production.

Erin Borain of Alpharetta High School accepts the Shuler Hensley Award for Leading Actress for her portrayal of Ms. Adelaide in "Guys and Dolls." At left is presenter Rob Evan.
