Weather Co., which operates the Atlanta-based Weather Channel, has hired a Yahoo! executive as its chief financial officer.

Peter Kuipers, vice president of finance for Yahoo!’s Americas region, will join Weather on May 6. He replaces Jerry Elliott, who joined Leap Wireless International last year.

Elliott is president and chief operating officer of the San Diego-based wireless communications company. He was CFO and chief administrative officer of The Weather Channel Companies before leaving for Leap Wireless.

The Weather Co. is owned by a consortium made up of NBC Universal and the private equity firms The Blackstone Group and Bain Capital.
