About the same number of people moved into Georgia in 2010 that moved out, according to two moving companies with trucks that crisscross the country.
United Van Lines and Atlas Van Lines both ranked Georgia as “balanced,” meaning no more than 55 percent of household moves were leaving or coming to the state.
Of the 5,891 moves that included Georgia, Atlas recorded 2,855 coming to and 3,036 going from the state, according to the company’s annual migration patterns study. Atlas’ study, which has tracked moves across the nation since 1993, saw an increase in the number of moves across the nation, according to a news release.
United had 10,355 shipments in Georgia, 5,580 of which were inbound and 4,775 were outbound, according to the data.
“This is not unexpected, the slowdown in moves to the state, especially considering these economic times,” said Mike Alexander, the research division chief for the Atlanta Regional Commission. “We do expect the economy will be stronger in 2011, and we should see an increase in inbound migration to Atlanta as employment picks up in the region and state.”
Atlas’ 2010 number showed increases in inbound and outbound activity when compared with 2009, which recorded record lows in household moves. In 2009, the moving company listed 2,740 moves into the state and 2,533 to other states, both numbers at the lowest level since 2001. In 2010, both rose, and it was the first time since 2002 that the survey recorded more people leaving Georgia than moving to the state.
Georgia was No. 5 on United’s list of 35 balanced states, with 53.9 percent of its shipments entering the state and 46.1 percent leaving the state. The findings are part of United’s 34th annual migration study, “which tracks where its customers move from and the most popular destinations over the past 12 months,” according to a news release.
Both companies found the District of Columbia and North Carolina as desired destinations, and Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey and Ohio as popular departure spots.
