UPS expanded its wingspan in Canada, opening a new hub at Calgary International Airport. The hub was built for 30 million Canadian dollars (approximately US$28.5 million).

The facility will allow UPS to ship a greater volume of goods between Canada and growing foreign markets like China, India and Mexico, the Sandy Springs-based package company said.

"The rise of middle classes in China and India offers great potential to businesses in the Calgary area,” said Mike Tierney, president of UPS Canada, in a statement.

The 145,000-square-foot hub nearly doubles UPS's package processing capability. UPS, which has been operating in West Canada for about 21 years, previously operated out of three facilities totaling about 79,000 square feet.

The new hub is a staging point for aircraft and trucks. It's expected to employ 400 people. UPS's shipment volume from the Calgary area has increased 60 percent since 2003, the company said.
