UPS is furthering its push into health care with the purchase of an Italian pharmaceutical logistics company.

The purchase of Pieffe Group for an undisclosed sum adds two major health care distribution facilities, in Milan and Rome, with more than 750,000 square feet of space and 12 cold storage areas. Pieffe Group has expertise in storage, distribution and cold chain solutions for pharmaceutical companies, UPS said.

UPS opened five dedicated health care facilities on four continents this year, and has been increasingly adding health care, biotech and medical device capabilities.

In August, the Sandy Springs logistics company added a board member with health care expertise. In June, it announced an expanded partnership with Merck. In January, UPS announced that it was expanding its dedicated health care facilities to 30.
