A good economy is in the eye of the beholder. And women in Georgia see the state economy and their own financial situation as more bleak than men do. That’s one of the takeaways from a recent exclusive Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll. Men were split on whether the economy locally is excellent/good versus not so good/poor. Compare that to women, almost two thirds of whom give the economy a thumbs down.

Of course, the economy is a complex beast, as a new package of AJC stories shows.

Regulators and labor experts see as a growing problem in bosses who wrongly classify employees as contractors. The U.S. Department of Labor is going after a local restaurant owner for counting workers as contractors, which would prevent them from being covered by minimum wage and overtime rules. Those moves can also keep money out of tax coffers. So here’s a question to consider: Is your waiter a contract worker?

The AJC also digs into why the continuing decline in Georgia’s unemployment rate isn’t all good news. One factor in the dropping rate is that many frustrated former workers are giving up their hunt for jobs.

How has the economy and job market been panning out lately for you and those close to you?
