After years of complaints from frequent fliers about how difficult it is to redeem miles for flights on Delta Air Lines, the Atlanta-based carrier has improved its standing in an annual mileage seat availability survey.
Over the last few years Delta has come in at or near the bottom in the reward seat availability survey by consulting firm IdeaWorks. This year, Delta is in 16th place out of 21 carriers from around the world.
The improvement comes after Delta earlier this year announced it will revamp its SkyMiles frequent flier program for 2015 so that frequent fliers earn miles based on the fare they pay, rather than distance flown. Delta’s vice president of SkyMiles Jeff Robertson also made a promise to make more award seats available at the 25,000 mile level.
The survey released Thursday found 55 percent award seat availability for booking queries, up from 36.4 percent last year. Southwest Airlines at the top of the ranking had 100 percent availability.
