Southwest Airlines awarded grants of $25,000 each to six non-profits in Georgia that competed for the funds by submitting online essays and videos. The grant contest attracted 352 submissions, which were winnowed down to 15 finalists. Then, the winners were selected through online voting open to the public.

Dallas-based Southest awarded grants to the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Senior Connections, the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership, the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, Good Mews and Nuci's Space.

The airline offered the grants as part of its launch of service at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport last month. Southwest gained access to Atlanta through its its acquisition of AirTran Airways last year.
