Southern Co. announced Tuesday that it is acquiring a wind project in Oklahoma that will be the Atlanta-based company’s largest renewable electric generating plant to date.

The company’s Southern Power subsidiary is acquiring the 299-megawatt Kay Wind facility in Oklahoma from Apex Clean Energy. While Southern did not disclosed terms of the deal, Apex announced Tuesday that it had closed on a $397 million construction loan for the project.

Southern Power has been growing its renewable energy generating business and now has nearly a dozen solar projects either completed or in the works, including several planned for Georgia in Taylor and Decatur counties.

The wind plant in Kay County, Okla., will be able to supply electricity to about 100,000 homes. It will use 130 wind turbines made by Siemens Energy, which has a major presence in metro Atlanta.

The electricity will be sold to Topeka, Kansas-based Westar Energy and Vinita, Okla.-based Grand River Dam Authority under long-term agreements.

Apex will operate the Oklahoma plant for Southern, the companies said. The deal is expected to close late this year.
