Georgia is among 36 states and the District of Columbia included in a recall of sliced apples sold at some popular fast-food restaurants and other businesses due to possible Listeria contamination.

A subsidiary of Ready Pac Foods Inc. is recalling 293,488 cases and 296,224 individually distributed units of fruits, vegetables and sandwich products containing apples with use-by dates of July 8 through Aug. 20 because they contain diced or sliced apples that may be contaminated with the bacteria.

Listeria was found on equipment used by the subsidiary, Swedesboro, N.J.-based Missa Bay LLC. No illnesses, however, have been reported.

While the recall included shipments to both Burger King and McDonald's, the recall involving McDonald's was confined to restaurants mainly in the Northeast.

The Listeria organism can cause serious or life-threatening food borne illness and can cause fever, muscle aches, nausea or diarrhea, especially with pregnant women and adults with weakened immune systems.
