Dominion Resources Inc. is acquiring interstate natural gas pipeline in southeastern Georgia and South Carolina from SCANA Corp. for $492.2 million.

SCANA, a Cayce, S.C.-based energy company that provides natural gas service to customers in metro Atlanta and other parts of Georgia through its SCANA Energy subsidiary, is selling its Carolina Gas Transmission Corp. subsidiary to Richmond, Va.-based Dominion Resources.

SCANA has been focusing on its retail operations, such as SCANA Energy, and less on wholesale operations like CGT and another operation, SCANA Communications, a fiber-optic telecommunications network the company is also selling.

SCANA has about 1.3 million natural gas customers in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.

The deal with Dominion includes nearly 1,500 miles of pipeline. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of next year.
