A complaint was filed with the Mecklenburg County Health Department against a Charlotte fast-food restaurant after a woman said she bit into a sandwich with moldy bread.

Lakendra Phifer was on her way to work when she bit into the sandwich she bought before sunrise.

"When I got to my parking space and opened the door, peeled back wrapper to eat the rest, I realized that I was eating mold," Phifer said.

She saw green mold on the croissant sandwich.

Contrary to belief, you cannot taste mold and savory sausage tastes better than mold -- never tasted it," Phifer said. "I immediately threw up from disgust.

She immediately took the sandwich back to the restaurant.

"The manager was apologetic and refunded money with no hesitation, but Burger King corporate on social media wasn't as responsive," she said.

Burger King responded to her Facebook post about eight hours later, offering her a free Whopper for her trouble, she said.

She declined, because she said she won't eat at Burger King again or any other fast-food restaurant.

"A caution to everyone," she said. "No matter where you're eat, peel back the wrapper and see what's on your food. I'll do that if I eat out again."

Channel 9 learned inspectors cited the Burger King eight times for health violations, three of them are considered critical.

The three worst violations Channel 9 found in the report said surfaces that came into contact with food were not cleared or sanitized.

They also found food had not been separated, which means they were at risk for cross-contamination.

Another incident said they found an employee may have been sick while working.

Burger King statement:

“Food quality and safety are top priorities at all Burger King restaurants and we take this very seriously. We have reached out to the franchisee that owns and operates this restaurant to get further information.”
