Newell Rubbermaid, which manufactures Calphalon cooking pans and Sharpie pens, could be joining forces with Jarden Corp., the maker of Yankee candles and Ball jars.

Published reports say the two consumer giants are in talks for a possible merger, creating one of the nation’s largest manufacturers of goods from kitchen products to Bicycle playing cards.

Reached by email on the news, Nicole Quinlan, spokeswoman for Atlanta-based Newell Rubbermaid, said, “We don’t comment on rumors and speculation.”

Newell in November completed the sale of Endicia, a developer of global online shipping solutions, to Stamps.com, for $215 million.

In October, the company bought Elmer’s Products, Inc., whose brands include Elmer’s and Krazy Glue, for $600 million.
