A produce company plans to develop a fruit and vegetable processing plant and distribution center in Clayton County and create 300 jobs, the company and state leaders said Monday.

Castellini Group of Companies will build the new plant in Conley, just north of Fort Gillem. Castellini Group supplies produce to wholesalers, retailers and food service companies, according to a news release from Gov. Nathan Deal’s office.

Site work is underway, said Grant Wainscott, economic development director for Clayton County. The facility is expected to open in September.

Castellini Group joins Kroger among companies that have announced large-scale distribution facilities in the Fort Gillem area. Kroger said earlier this year that it will open a new distribution facility at Fort Gillem, much of which recently came under civilian control and is slated for redevelopment as a distribution hub.
