A popular "fast fashion" chain is in hot water after a social-justice group claimed the retailer racially profiles its customers.
According to WPIX-TV, the Center for Popular Democracy said in a new report that Zara's New York employees disproportionately target black shoppers as possible shoplifters. The organization claimed that workers look for "special order" shoppers, defined as "anyone who looks black, not put-together or urban," WPIX said.
The report, based on interviews with 250 Zara employees in New York, also found that black workers were less satisfied with their hours and less likely to be promoted than white workers.
A Zara representative refuted the claims and said the Center for Popular Democracy has "ulterior motives," according to the Daily Mail.
