The Peachtree Center Athletic Club in downtown Atlanta will shut its doors at the end of the year after more than two decades, interim manager Jessica Parsons said Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, that is true despite all our efforts to keep it open,” she said. “The whole health club industry as a whole is hurting. It’s a luxury and people can get rid of it.”

More than 55 employees work at the business, a 72,000-square-foot luxury sports, fitness and wellness complex, according to its Web site.

President Barack Obama and his team worked out at the facility while campaigning last summer, before his town hall meeting in Cobb County.
