In a bid to get online orders to customers faster, Home Depot on Monday opened a new “fulfillment center” in Locust Grove.

The 1 million-square-foot facility will open with 125 jobs, but will eventually increase that number to 300, the Atlanta-based retailer said.

The company’s move is part of fast-growing competition among retailers to deliver orders to consumers with more agility, often in two days or less. Online giant Amazon suggested in December it could push the industry even farther in the next four years by using drones to deliver packages 30 minutes after a completed customer order.

The Locust Grove Home Depot “fulfillment center” will stock about 100,000 products, adding to the 35,000 products offered in a typical Home Depot bricks-and-mortar store. It is one of three the company will open this year. (The others are planned for Perris, Calif., and Troy, Ohio.)

“This is a significant investment in our ability to say yes to customers with confidence,” Mark Holifield, Home Depot’s supply chain senior vice president, said in a statement.

“Yes, you have access to our entire inventory to fulfill your order,” Holifield said. “Yes, you can expect a speedy delivery. And yes, you can rely on information updates about your delivery.”
