A federal judge has banned a DeKalb County tax preparer from preparing returns after he and his company were accused of repeatedly understating clients’ federal tax liabilities, the Justice Department said this week.

Matthew Adegbite of Tucker and his companies, MAS & Associates CPA LLC and Mathew A. Adegbite CPA PC, allegedly had filed more than 1,000 false returns since 2008. The returns listed tax deductions and credits, such as the first time homebuyer credit, that were wrongly claimed or inflated.

Efforts were being made to reach Adegbite for comment.

In addition to understating tax liabilities, Adegbite also overstated refunds, the EEOC said. The agency said the actions may have cost the federal government millions of dollars in lost tax revenue.
