Executives from Otsuka Chemical Co. gathered with local officials and Gov. Nathan Deal on Tuesday to break ground on the company’s North American headquarters.

The firm is building a plant at The Lakes at Green Valley, an industrial park outside of Griffin. The facility, which will employ more than 30 people, will make materials for automotive brake pads.

The Japanese company is part of a large chemical firm in Japan that makes pharmaceuticals and specializes in energy drinks and vitamin brands.

Deal said Otsuka could have located its new plant anywhere in the U.S. but picked Georgia for a reason. He said the pace of economic announcements and groundbreaking ceremonies is picking up.

“We are having these virtually every week, and sometimes we’re having multiple announcements every day,” he said. “And people in the business world are taking note.”
