Metro Atlanta may be iced over for the moment, but that isn’t stopping Home Depot from looking ahead to spring.

The Atlanta-based home improvement giant said today that is hiring more 80,000 temporary workers nationwide in anticipation of its big spring selling season, the busiest time of the year for the company.

More than 1,200 of those hires will be here in metro area, said spokesman Stephen Holmes. Some of the jobs will transition to permanent employment.

“We’ll try to keep as many on board permanently as we can for regular positions,” he said.

The job news comes just days after the company opened a 1 million-square-foot “fulfillment center” in Locust Grove, one of three planned over the next 12 months. The facility south of Atlanta brings 125 jobs, which Home Depot says it will eventually increase to 300.

Spring is busiest for the company as consumers ramp up yard work, including planting in gardens, building decks and pruning trees. They also take on indoor projects, such as painting and installing laminate and hardwood flooring.

The jobs are available on the web at www.careers.homedepot.com. All applicants must apply online, Home Depot said.
