Atlanta Journal-Constitution Publisher Amy Glennon is leaving her position to focus full-time on the growth of digital products targeted at specific audiences.

Glennon will become publisher of “vertical” businesses including Dawg Nation, SEC Country and MundoHispanico, Cox Media Group announced on Thursday.

Mike Joseph, executive vice president at Cox Media Group, will step in as AJC publisher in addition to other roles at Cox Enterprises, the Atlanta-based owner of the media properties. Brian Cooper, the AJC’s former senior vice president of finance and business operations, has been named general manager.

The changes come as the AJC seeks to expand on the success of topic-specific online content such as the University of Georgia athletic coverage published under the Dawg Nation banner.

Such niche products have grown quickly in popularity at a time when readers are changing the ways in which they consume news.

“As part of our comprehensive newspaper strategy, we have an exciting opportunity to harness the strength of the new niche content vertical businesses that we have been piloting over the last year, and we are fortunate to have proven leadership talent like Amy and Brian who can fill these critical roles,” Joseph said in a statement.

“Our current vertical sites generate an impressive 25 million monthly visits, and a dedicated leadership team will take them to the next level of regional and national scale, while developing new vertical businesses,” he said.

Glennon was named publisher of the AJC in 2012 and has held various roles at the newspaper, including features editor, director of innovations and Gwinnett General Manager. She was the AJC’s first female publisher.
