Georgia’s manufacturing economy continues to underperform the nation, according to reports released Wednesday.
Last month Georgia companies produced fewer goods than July, ordered less material and employed fewer people, according to the monthly Purchasing Manufacturers Index compiled by Kennesaw State University. The overall index stood at 55 for August, down 2.9 points from July. An index over 50 shows that manufacturing is expanding, according to the school’s Econometric Center.
“The Georgia PMI's level is still demonstrating growth,” said Center director Don Sabbarese. “It is still too early to tell if its level of growth is slowing."
A national manufacturing gauge, released Wednesday by the Institute for Supply Management, showed an unexpected rise in its manufacturing index in August.
