Georgia small businesses can get financial help when they hire employees through the Hire Work Ready Program.

Companies with 50 or fewer employees are eligible to receive $250 for each individual certified Work Ready who is hired, up to $1,250 total. Funding for the program, announced Thursday, comes from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and is to go towards hiring and training costs.

The state estimates the program will encourage the hiring of 2,000 people certified Work Ready by more than 400 small businesses.

Small businesses can apply for the reimbursement at www.gaworkready.org.

Georgia Work Ready is based on a skills assessment, certification and skills gap training for job seekers and a job profiling system for businesses.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
