This week is bringing more good news at the pump as gas prices continue a downward trend.

AAA reports the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in Georgia was $3.67 on Tuesday, down 6 cents from a week ago and 17 cents from a month ago. The average a year ago was $3.82.

The price in Georgia is considerably less than the national average of $3.80. Metro Atlanta's average price was just slightly above the state average at $3.68. The state's cheapest gas was found in Augusta at $3.54; the most expensive in Athens at $3.72.

Higher-octane grades were down in Georgia as well, with mid-range averaging $3.84 and premium at $3.99. Diesel averaged $4.05.

According to atlantagasprices.com, the cheapest gas in the metro area is $3.46 a gallon at a station on Rockbridge Road in DeKalb; the most expensive was $3.99 at a number of stations in Atlanta.

The improving prices are largely attributed to the falling price of oil worldwide, analysts say. On Monday, oil prices fell 6 cents to $104.87 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, crude oil dropped 36 cents to $119.47 a barrel.

Experts attribute the declining price of oil to a number of factors, including reduced demand, a recent spike in U.S. oil output and economic concerns in Europe.
