The National Urban League’s Economic Empowerment Tour will stop in Atlanta Thursday to offer help to troubled borrowers trying to avoid foreclosure, and assistance to jobless people seeing work. .
Atlanta is the first stop for the tour, which is part foreclosure prevention workshop and job fair. The event, in partnership with the Atlanta Urban League, will be at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis on Peachtree Center Avenue Thursday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The event pairs borrowers with U.S. Housing and Urban Development-approved counselors, as well as representatives of mortgage lenders and servicers, including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, CitiMortgage, GMAC and JPMorgan Chase.
Comcast, Concessions International, State Farm, Grady Health Systems, Prudential and Primerica are among more than 30 local employers scouting the job fair looking to hire, event organizers said.
“Our goal is to raise awareness of the foreclosure issue and the types of assistance for families and individuals to save their homes,” said Sharron Kelly, director of housing and community development for Atlanta Urban League.
Georgia is No. 8 in foreclosures nationally, according to RealtyTrac. Unemployment remains at 10 percent, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.
Borrowers should bring current pay stubs showing 30 days income, or profit and loss statements if self-employed; benefits statements; lists of all household expenses; signed tax returns for the past two years; bank statements for the past two months; recent mortgage and property insurance statements; recent correspondence with mortgage companies; and mortgage closing documents.
Kelly said a modification or enrollment into government assistance plans can’t be guaranteed in all cases, but meeting with counselors or lenders and mortgage servicers can help to avoid a foreclosure.
“Ask questions, defend yourself,” Kelly said. “Take ownership of your situation, that’s key.”
The event is free. More information is available at 404-659-1150 or online at www.atlul.org.
