The Justice Department filed a complaint against a Tucker tax preparer Thursday, claiming he and his companies have filed fraudulent returns that have cost the federal government millions of dollars.

The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court in Atlanta, seeks to bar Matthew Adegbite and his companies, MAS & Associates CPA, LLC and Matthew A. Adegbite CPA, PC, from preparing federal income tax returns.

The Internal Revenue Service said it has examined more than 285 returns prepared by Adegbite and found repeated instances where he understated clients’ tax liabilities. The IRS said it subsequently assessed additional taxes exceeding $1 million, and said the average new tax liability per return was more than $3,500.

One client targeted for review saw his taxes increase by $2,878 in 2008 and $4,900 in 2009, the complaint says.

Adegbite could not be reached for comment.

The complaint says the U.S. “has lots millions” from the understatement of liabilities on tax returns prepared by Adegbite.
