Metro Atlanta’s unemployment rate fell to 5.9 percent in March from 6.1 percent in February, the state labor department said Thursday.

Here’s what happened:

— The number of jobs increased by 1,900.

— Most of the job gains came in trade, transportation and warehousing; leisure and hospitality; and professional and business services.

— Most of the job losses were in construction and manufacturing.

— Cobb and Gwinnett had the lowest unemployment rates among the core metro counties — 5.3 percent. Fulton was next with 6.2 percent, followed by DeKalb at 6.4 percent and Clayton at 7.9 percent.

— During the past year, metro Atlanta’s unemployment rate has fallen from 7.0 percent as 80,500 jobs were added.
