Delta Air lines expects about 65,000 to apply for its 1,000 job openings, as unemployed workers and others seek opportunities.

"The response to the job openings has been overwhelming," chief executive Richard Anderson told employees in a weekly phone message. "This isn’t unusual. We always get literally thousands more applications than we have openings."

Anderson announced the openings last month, saying the Atlanta-based airline is adding reservations agents and customer service agents  to help passengers during disruptions such as storm-related delays and cancellations.

The jobs will be in Delta's hubs and largest airport operations, including in Atlanta, and the added employees will also help with operations at airports where diverted flights are sent when storms hit Atlanta.

The company said it offered positions internally before filling openings with external hires. Delta is also hiring about 300 pilots.
