Delegation from Beijing airport visits Hartsfield-Jackson

Aug 3, 2010

Beijing Capital International Airport is on a path to surpass Hartsfield-Jackson International as the world's busiest airport, but a delegation from the Chinese airport assumed a collegial approach during a visit to the Atlanta airport on Tuesday.

"We would like to learn from the best airport in the world," said Zhiyi Dong, chairman of the Beijing airport, through a translator during the visit to Hartsfield-Jackson. "There's more cooperation than competition."

But Dong also said Beijing's airport could unseat Atlanta's airport as world's busiest in three to five years.

Dubai has also targeted the spot of world's busiest airport with the opening of a new airport.

Dong came to Hartsfield-Jackson with a delegation of a dozen other Chinese colleagues.

For Hartsfield-Jackson, "it's not necessarily about being No. 1," said interim general manager Robert Kennedy. "It's about doing it efficiently, safely and securely."
