Ground was broken Tuesday on a $41 million Westin hotel on Jekyll Island.

The 200-room beachfront hotel, the Westin Jekyll Island, is expected to open in September 2014. It will be adjacent to the Jekyll Island Convention Center, which opened last year, and is part of the island authority’s Beach Village project.

The new hotel is being built by Jekyll Oceanfront Hotel, a joint venture of Leon N. Weiner & Associates Inc., New Castle Hotels & Resorts and other investors.

The Beach Village project also includes an oceanfront promenade, village green, restaurants, retail shopping and Great Dunes Park.
