When the Commerce Club opens its doors Saturday night for its grand opening gala, its members will see the result of a $7 million renovation to the 49th floor of 191 Peachtree.
New features are a ballroom for 200, a 103-inch television to watch games in the new members bar, and seven meetings rooms named for famous Atlantans.
But the space won’t look entirely new. Some familiar furniture and art was moved from the previous One Ninety One Club on the fourth floor of the Cousins Properties-owned tower and the old Commerce Club about six blocks away. The artifacts include paintings by Lamar Dodd and Wilbur G. Kurtz and a plaque with the cast of Fulton County stadium that was originally given to Ivan Allen.
The new club space, renovated by Winter Construction, is the result of a decision to merge the memberships of the One Ninety One and Commerce clubs, and to move to the new location.
The offices of The Atlanta Press Club also moved to the new space from the previous Commerce Club building.
Editor’s note: Tobin is on the board of The Atlanta Press Club.
