Coca-Cola Co. said Friday it will retire a 42-foot-tall Coke bottle at Turner Field on July 2 and replace it with a new high-tech version by the end of the summer.
The giant Coke bottle has occupied a spot for 12 years above left field in an area called Coca-Cola Sky Field. Fireworks shoot out of its top when the Braves hit a home run.
Coca-Cola has not decided what it will do with the bottle. It's made of 11,000 pieces of Atlanta Braves baseball equipment, including 6,680 baseballs, 290 bats and 86 gloves.
In honor of the bottle's retirement, the first 15,000 fans to enter the stadium on July 2 will receive a commemorative 8-ounce Coke bottle. The company said it selected that date because it's the final home game before the All-Star break. The Braves play the Phillies that night.
The giant bottle also has a page on Facebook under "Turner Field Coca-Cola Bottle" where fans can post photos and memories of the bottle.
Coke did not release images of the bottle's replacement but said in a press release that it will be a 21st century version that will "offer even more ways to entertain Braves fans." The company declined to say how much the new bottle would cost.
