Cbeyond, a homegrown telecom company, said Monday it will add at least 600 jobs in Cobb County.

The information technology company also plans to build a call center and training facility alongside its headquarters at Interstate 75 and Windy Hill Road.

In all, Cbeyond aims for more than 1,300 local jobs by 2013.

"We're at a critical point of stair-stepping to the next level of growth," said Andy Hammons, the company's senior director for finance.

Hammons expects Cbeyond to reach $1 billion in revenues within the next five years. Revenues hit $350 million in 2008, he said.

Cbeyond, started in 2000 with 15 employees, handles the technology needs — local and long-distance voice, broadband Internet, mobile, voicemail, e-mail and more — for roughly 44,000 small businesses. While many of the new hires will handle customer-care queries, Hammons said, sales, marketing, IT and operations positions will also be filled.

Cbeyond is eligible for as much as $4,000 a year in tax credits per job created — roughly $12.5 million over five years, according to the Georgia Department of Economic Development. The company could also reap another $2 million in training and other incentives.

Hammons said the tax credits played a "very important" role in the company's decision to expand locally. Without them, fewer local jobs would've been created, he added, without divulging which other states Cbeyond considered for expansion.

Cbeyond reported first-quarter net income of $59,000, down from $1 million during the same period a year ago. Revenue for the quarter increased 22 percent to $98.3 million.
